Days after Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav announced that he would be happy if the next prime minister is from Uttar Pradesh, he avoided asking a direct question on whether he will back the leader of Bahujan Samaj Party, Mayawati, as the next PM, should the anti-BJP front come to power.

Yadav’s SP and Mayawati’s BSP recently formed an alliance to fight Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party in UP together.

On Tuesday, in an interview to PTI, when the Samajwadi Party chief, Akhilesh Yadav was asked who his first choice as PM was – Mayawati or Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee? he refused to give a direct answer and instead said efforts should be made to elect a new Prime Minister. He said some issues can be discussed after polls.

He also justified keeping the grand old party out of the alliance and that he cannot answer right now but he assured that the country needs new PM and it will get it after the polls.

Both SP and BSP sought to play down Akhilesh’s comment on next PM.
