Chintamani Malviya, the Bhartiya Janata Party member of Parliament from Ujjain, on Tuesday, strongly opposed the Supreme Court’s verdict on bursting of firecrackers between 8pm to 10pm on Diwali and termed it “unacceptable”.

Tweeting in Hindi, a defiant Malviya reacted to the Supreme Court’s verdict and said: “I will celebrate my Diwali in my conventional way and only after Lakshmi Pooja at 10pm … I will burn firecrackers. No interference will be tolerated in our Hindu tradition. Even if I have to go to the jail for my religious tradition, I will happily go to jail.”

Malviya later said that he had only mentioned his thoughts on social media. He further said that since Lakshmi Puja is celebrated in accordance to with the auspicious time in the night, it’s only after 10pm firecrackers are burst. He also added that “frequent (court) verdicts on Hindu traditions” are not acceptable and that was the reason why he said he would celebrate Diwali in his own way.
