Triple talaq: Bengal minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury says Quran will prevail over Constitution

West Bengal’s state minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury assailed the BJP government’s order to pass the ordinance on instant triple talaq, which criminalizes the practice. The Narendra Modi Cabinet passed the ordinance on Thursday.

Chowdhury, who is also the president of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, said, “For us, our holy scripture, the Quran Sharif, is supreme and if any constitutional provision or any law contradicts the Quran, then our scripture will prevail and not the law or Constitution.”

Chowdhury also alleged that the BJP is not just playing the religion card but is also playing with Constitution. He said the ordinance will have no effect on Muslims and no one will follow the new law. They will only follow the religion and the holy book.
