New Delhi: United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi has called for a meeting of the opposition leaders on May 23 – the day the Lok Sabha election results would be declared. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader MK Stalin confirmed of having received a communication in this regard.

This is seen as a significant move considering that none of the parties, including the ruling BJP, is expected to get full majority in the 17th Lok Sabha.

Interestingly, the UPA chairperson, who was missing during the campaigning in the current Lok Sabha election season, has suddenly drawn attention towards her after media came out with this information.

Media quoting, unnamed sources, reported that Gandhi has assigned senior Congress leader and Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath and a couple of senior party leaders to reach out to Biju Janata Dal leader and Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik, YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy and Telangana Rashtra Samithi leader and Telanagana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

There are also reports of informal talks going on between several of the opposition leaders.

It is to be noted that the Congress is interested to work with YS Jaganmohan Reddy, who walked out of the party after the death of his father and former chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Meanwhile, this decision might affect the Congress relationship with Telugu Desam Party chief and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, who is engaged in a direct fight with Jaganmohan Reddy in the Andhra Pradesh assembly election.

Significantly, the three states – Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana – have 60 Lok Sabha seats among them.
