Arun Jaitley.

Finance minister Arun Jaitley attacked Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s claim that he had met with Nirav Modi, the Indian fugitive businessman, in Parliament and used said the “clown prince was out-clowning himself” by “resorting to lies”.

In a Facebook post, Jaitley wrote: “I do not recollect ever having even seen Nirav Modi in my life. The question of his meeting me in Parliament does not arise. If he came to Parliament, as Rahul Gandhi claims, then reception records would show that. Where have I admitted all this, Mr Gandhi?”

In the post, Jaitley asked: “Is it a personality issue where he lies a dozen times and then in self-delusion believes it to be true or is it a case of a ‘clown prince’ out clowning himself?”

While rejecting Gandhi’s claim that Jaitley had met with the business tycoon Vijay Mallya, Jaitley in a Facebook post wrote: “Rahul claims that I have admitted that Mallya had a meeting with me and told me that he was going out of the country and I helped him to escape.”

Congress hit back and described Jaitley’s comments as “hollow rants of a court jester”. In a tweet, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala wrote: “You bang the truth to hide ineptitude, you bang the rupee by your mismanagement, you bang exports by your incompetence, and you bang the economy by your incomprehension. India needs a finance minister, not a ‘babble blogger’.”
