Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi while talking about Saturday’sUttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand hooch tragedy, said the idea of prohibition cannot work everywhere as it did in his state. More than a 100 people died in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district and the adjoining Haridwar district of Uttarakhand after drinking spurious liquor.

Talking to reporters in Dehradun, on Sunday, the deputy CM said, “Prohibition may have worked in Bihar but it cannot work everywhere. Different states have different circumstances and it is up to their respective chief ministers to decide whether or not imposing prohibition will be a practical idea.”

According to him, imposing a prohibition in Bihar was easier as alcohol consumption was never a part of Bihari culture and added, “It is not like this in all states. Alcohol consumption is not a taboo in several of them. Fathers and sons take it together.”

He was in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun in connection with the BJP’s monthlong “Bharat ke Man ki Baat Modi ke Saath” campaign.
