Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, on Thursday, accused the BJP government of trying to distract society’s attention from the serious issues, like hike in fuel price and fall of Indian rupee against the US dollar, by polarizing the society.

Kharge alleged, “The government is attempting polarization in the society to deflect attention from important developmental issues.” He claimed that the condition of farmers, dalits and minorities was “bad” in the country.

Kharge said, “When the Indian currency was between Rs 45 and Rs 55 against the US dollar, Narendra Modi, who was the chief minister of Gujarat then, would constantly criticize us. But now he is keeping quiet. The government has collected Rs 12 lakh crore worth excise duty on petrol and diesel.”

Kharge further claimed that the “BJP-led government wanted to increase the petrol price to Rs 100 per litre and diesel to Rs 78 per litre, whereas, the fuel price in the international market was less when the Congress-led UPA was in power.”
