CJI Ranjan Gogoi writes to PM Narendra Modi to increase Supreme Court bench strength, retirement age of HC judges

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has written two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting the latter to give top priority for two constitutional amendments in order to tackle the backlog of 43 lakh cases pending in the Supreme Court and the high courts.

In his letters, Justice Gogoi sought the raising of the strength of judges in the Supreme Court, which is currently 31. The other request was to increase the retirement age of judges in high courts from 62 to 65.

The CJI also wrote a third letter to the PM sought revival of an old tradition of tenure appointments of retired SC and HC judges under Article 128 and Article 224A of the Constitution to clear the pending cases.
