Arun Jaitley (L) and Rahul Gandhi have been making allegations and counterallegations against each other.

Union finance minister Arun Jaitley called the Congress president, Rahul Gandhi, a “clown prince”. Jaitley, on Thursday, posted a note on his Facebook page titled "Falsehood of a Clown Prince" where he accused the Congress president of leading a “false campaign” on the Narendra Modi government’s Rafale warplane deal with France and waving loans of 15 industrialists, which amounted to Rs 250,000 crores.

In his post, Jaitley slammed Gandhi for his continuous assault against the Centre government over Rafale deal. Jaitley wrote: “His strategy is simple – concoct a lie and repeat it as many times. This, at least, provides him some concocted material for his statements / speeches for otherwise an issueless Congress.”

He further wrote: “In mature democracies those who rely on falsehood are considered unfit for public life. Many have been banished from political activity because they were caught lying. But this rule obviously can’t apply to a dynastic organization like Congress Party.”

The Congress is alleging that a massive scam took place in the $9 billion Rafale deal where the government is buying the warplanes at a highly inflated price. It also accuses the Modi government of crony capitalism. Gandhi’s party alleges that the government pushed Rafale’s maker Dassault Aviation to make Anil Ambani’s Reliance Defence an offset partner in the manufacturing of the 36 jets ordered by India.
