Mamata Banerjee says ‘it seems BJP doesn’t consider Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose a national leader’
Amid the ongoing war of words between the Centre and the West Bengal government, Mamata Banerjee, on Wednesday, slammed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government for not declaring Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary as a nationwide holiday. She said it seems the Bharatiya Janata Party does not consider Netaji as a national leader.
Banerjee’s comment came on the same day Modi inaugurated the Subhas Chandra Bose Museum at the iconic Red Fort to mark the nationalist leader’s birth anniversary.
At the 122nd birth anniversary of Bose in Darjeeling, Banerjee said, “It seems they don’t consider him (Netaji) to be a national leader”.
Highlighting the role Netaji played in India’s freedom struggle, she said, “Netaji had talked of togetherness and unity of all people of the country,” adding “a person who takes people from all sections along is a ‘true leader’.”
She said this is also the reason why Mahatma Gandhi, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Babasaheb Ambedkar were great national leaders.
