Mallikarjun Kharge.

Senior Congress leader, Mallikarjun Kharge, who was the only dissenting voice in the high-power “selection committee” meeting on the ousted CBI director, Alok Verma, asked the prime minister, Narendra Modi, to make public the findings of the Central Vigilance Commission and Justice AK Patnaik’s report on Verma as well as the minutes of the January 10 meeting, which eventually decided to remove Verma from his post.

Khagre in a letter to the prime minister, on Monday, said all this should be done, and the public should make their own decision in this matter.

The scathing two-page letter raises a lot of questions things, like the conduct of the proceedings in the panel. Kharge, in the letter, said the panel “chose to take a decision based on a report that now stands disowned by Justice Patnaik who was asked by the Supreme Court to monitor the CVC’s enquiry.”

He further added that the removal of Alok Verma on January 10, 2019 was made without following lawful process and a committee comprising senior representatives of the executive, legislature and judiciary should not take a decision just on a report prepared by an outside agency (implying the CVC).

He has also asked for an immediate appointment of a new CBI director without any further delay.
