Nitin Gadkari says ‘George Fernandes was a staunch patriot and my icon’

Union minister Nitin Gadkari, on Tuesday, said, the former defence minister, George Fernandes, was a “firm patriot” and his “icon”. Fernandes who was the defence minister 1998 and 2004, died after a prolong illness, on Tuesday. He was 88.

In his condolence message, Gadkari said: “George Fernandes dedicated his life to the nation and democracy. … He was a staunch patriot, who fought for providing justice to workers.”

He said, “We have lost a big leader ... I considered him my icon. I am deeply saddened by his passing away.”
