The All India Trinamool Congress, on Thursday, accused both Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP government and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for the cancellation of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Chicago for a program meant to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s historic address at the World Parliament of Religions.

The TMC further claimed that the BJP and RSS only wanted only one major programme to mark the event that be attended by the RSS chief, Mohan Bhagwat, as the “most important” representative from India.

In an official statement, TMC’s national spokesman Derek O'Brien said, “Vivekananda Vedanta Society of Chicago had invited Mamata Banerjee to attend a programme in Chicago. The CM of West Bengal confirmed her participation.”

O’Brien further said, “Subsequently, it was learnt that under ‘tremendous pressure’, the organizers were prevailed upon to cancel the programme. It is common knowledge that BJP-RSS wanted only one major programme in Chicago under the banner of Global Hindu Congress (World Hindu Foundation) to be attended by Mohan Bhagwat.”
