Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, on Saturday, called the removal Alok Verma as the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation a “mistake” and accused the government of “destroying” the premier investigating agency.

Kharge, who was one of the members of the high-level selection committee which took the decision to shunt out Verma as the CBI director, claimed that he was not even given a chance to present his side. He said that he submitted a note in which he disagreed with their decision. The other two members of the selection panel were Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Supreme Court senior judge Justice AK Sikri.

Talking to media, Kharge alleged that the Modi government “doesn’t hold any moral authority” and was destroying the CBI. He said, “The Modi government does not hold any moral authority. They are doing wrong and destroying the institution.”  He also added that he is “not in favor of anyone”, but “one should follow the rules and the procedures”.

On Saturday, Supreme Court judge Justice AK Patnaik, who was the monitor in the Central Vigilance Commission probe against Verma, said there was “no evidence” against the former CBI boss and the decision to remove Verma was “hasty”.

Interestingly, Khagre had also expressed his opposition even when the selection committee appointed Verma as CBI chief two years back.
