Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, while addressing a gathering after flagging off the commercial run on Lucknow Metro’s North-South corridor, through videoconferencing from Kanpur, urged the state governments to take strong action against those who indulge in violence against Kashmiris.

His statement came in reference with the accident in Uttar Pradesh where two Kashmiris were beaten up by a group of saffron-clad men.

Modi asserted that the attack was carried out by some mindless people and the Uttar Pradesh government took immediate action. He said, “I would also like to request other state governments to take strict action, wherever such acts take place.”

This is the second time the prime minister has spoken on this issue. On February 24, while addressing a rally in Rajasthan’s Tonk, Modi had said “our fight is for Kashmir, not against Kashmir or Kashmiris.”

Kashmiris have faced discrimination, threats and assaults in several parts of the country after the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF soldiers were killed. Following this, the Supreme Court directed chief secretaries and director generals of state police forces to take “prompt and necessary” action where incidents of threat and violence against Kashmiris were reported.
