Opposing the Triple Talaq Bill, the leader of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and member of Parliament, Asaduddin Owaisi, on Thursday questioned why the government was criminalizing triple talaq when it supported the decriminalization of homosexuality and adultery law.

While speaking during the “triple talaq” debate in Lok Sabha, on Thursday, Owaisi, referring to the Sabaramila verdict, said, “When the Sabarimala (Supreme Court) judgment was delivered, then you speak about faith. Don’t Muslims have their faith? Your faith is faith, but my faith is not faith? Is this not violation of culture? Is this not violation of Article 29 of Constitution (cultural and educational rights, protection of interests of minorities)? The intention of the government is not clean”.

He also said: “I want to ask the government, what was your compulsion? The Supreme Court has decriminalized homosexuality, you are criminalizing triple talaq … why are you doing this? Because it will be used against us (Muslims) … The sexual minorities have been given the choice. Why should not religious minority be given the choice? This is injustice for Muslims.”
