The president of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi, while launching his party’s campaign in Manipur for the Lok Sabha election, on Wednesday, said his party won’t allow the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to be passed. The bill allows non-Muslim refugees from neighbouring countries to seek Indian citizenship.

While addressing an election rally in Imphal’s Hafta Kangjeibung, Gandhi said, “The Congress will defend your culture, language and history. We are not going to allow the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill to be passed.”

The people in the northeast fear that the region will be most affected if the bill is passed and will also change the region’s demography and culture. There were widespread protests in the northeast recently when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government pushed for passing the bill.
